Frequently Asked Questions About Dentistry
General Care & Visits
How often should I come in for cleanings and checkups?
Most adults benefit from a dental exam and professional cleaning every six months, but our dentists may recommend a different schedule based on your individual oral health. Regular visits let us catch problems early and keep gums and teeth healthy.
What should I expect at a routine dental visit?
A typical visit includes a medical/history review, exam of teeth and gums, a professional cleaning, and X-rays or 3D imaging when needed. Our dentists will discuss findings and recommend preventive steps or treatment options.
What home care should I be doing between visits?
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss once a day, and use an ADA-accepted fluoride product if recommended. Good home care plus regular professional cleanings is the best defense against cavities and gum disease.
Dental Emergencies
What is a dental emergency?
Emergencies are problems that require immediate care to stop tissue bleeding, relieve severe pain, or treat infection or trauma that could threaten the airway or cause permanent damage. Examples include uncontrolled bleeding, swelling that affects breathing, severe infection, or facial trauma.
A tooth was knocked out — what should I do?
Find the tooth, handle it by the crown (not the root), keep it moist (place in milk or a tooth preservation solution), and get to our dentists immediately. Acting within 30 minutes gives the best chance to save the tooth.
I have severe tooth pain or swelling — should I come in?
Yes. Severe pain or swelling can indicate an infection that needs prompt attention. Call our dentists right away; if you cannot reach them and breathing is affected or swelling is spreading, seek emergency medical care.
Restorative Treatments (Fillings, Crowns, Bridges)
How do you decide between a filling and a crown?
Small to moderate cavities are commonly treated with tooth-colored fillings. When a tooth is weakened by decay, a large filling, or after root canal therapy, a crown is often recommended to restore strength and function. Our dentists will evaluate the tooth and explain the best option.
Are modern fillings safe and durable?
Yes. Tooth-colored composite fillings and ceramic restorations bond to the tooth and preserve more natural structure. Materials and techniques have improved longevity and aesthetics compared with older options.
Endodontics (Root Canals)
What is a root canal and why might I need one?
A root canal treats inflammation or infection inside a tooth’s pulp (nerve and blood supply). Our dentist removes the diseased tissue, disinfects the canals, seals them, and the tooth is then restored, typically with a crown, to preserve function.
Are root canals painful?
With modern anesthesia and techniques, most patients report little to no pain during the procedure. Discomfort afterward is usually mild and controlled with over-the-counter pain relief. Root canal treatment relieves the severe pain caused by an infected pulp.
Dental Implants & Oral Surgery
What is involved with dental implants?
Dental implants are titanium posts placed into the jawbone to serve as artificial roots. After healing and bone integration (often several months), a crown or bridge is attached. Implants restore chewing function and help preserve jawbone and facial structure. Treatment planning typically includes X-rays or 3D imaging and a medical review.
How much do implants usually cost, and how long does the process take?
Costs vary widely by procedure type, materials, and location. Typical timelines run from a few months up to six months or more, depending on healing and whether grafting is needed. Average price ranges are available from patient resources, but an exact quote requires an exam and treatment plan.
Insurance, Payment & Coverage
Does dental insurance cover everything?
Dental insurance commonly covers preventive care and portions of restorative treatment, but coverage limits and patient responsibility vary by plan. Our office can verify benefits, help file claims, and explain what your plan covers.
Can I get a payment plan for major dental work?
Many practices offer flexible, interest-free or low-interest payment plans to spread costs. Discuss financing options with the office to find a plan that suits your budget.
Cosmetic Dentistry & Whitening
Is professional whitening better than over-the-counter products?
Professional whitening uses custom trays and dentist-supervised formulations for safer, more even results. In cases of severe intrinsic staining, veneers or crowns may be a better option; our dentists will advise you.
